Rumors about Magic: The Gathering’s Spider-Man crossover being locked to just one print run spread quickly last week, sparking concern among players and collectors. But Wizards of the Coast has now stepped in to set the record straight: the rumors simply aren’t true.
In a statement to IGN, a Wizards spokesperson clarified that there is “no truth” to claims about Spider-Man Play Boosters being restricted to a single printing.
For long-time fans, that’s an important distinction, because Play Boosters are the standard packs most players rely on to actually build decks. Limiting those could have easily caused price spikes and shortages, the kind seen with the recent Final Fantasy set, which even after quadrupled production still struggled to meet demand.
Collector Boosters – premium packs with foils and alternate art – often do get just one print run, which likely fueled the misunderstanding. But in this case, the Spider-Man set is a Standard-legal release, and Standard sets are almost always printed to match demand, ensuring accessibility for competitive play.
Part of what gave the rumor traction was the unusual digital rollout. Wizards confirmed that the Spider-Man set will be fully reskinned with in-universe Marvel art for MTG Arena and Magic Online – something that hasn’t happened before with a Standard set. Usually, digital exclusivity is reserved for special Commander crossovers like Doctor Who. That, paired with the Disney licensing speculation, gave fans plenty of room to panic online.
Still, with reveals already teased at San Diego Comic-Con and more previews coming before the August 29 debut, the crossover is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest MTG events. The paper release is set for September 26, and Wizards has reassured fans they won’t be left scrambling for packs this time.
