After a strong box office run, Superman is officially landing on HBO Max on September 19, marking a significant milestone for Warner Bros. and the evolving DC Universe under James Gunn.

The film, which debuted in theaters this July, surpassed $615 million globally, making it one of the rare superhero titles in 2025 to cross the $600 million threshold in an era where big-screen attendance has dramatically declined compared to a decade ago.

Warner Bros. is treating the streaming debut as more than a standard release. HBO Max will feature a complete Superman takeover, transforming the app into a digital Metropolis for fans. Expect a Daily Planet homepage makeover with refreshed visuals, unique content rails, and even an immersive Fortress of Solitude section with curated extras. Hidden Easter eggs, like portals leading to Lex Luthor’s infamous Pocket Prison, will provide interactive touches for subscribers looking to explore beyond the film itself. To ensure inclusivity, an American Sign Language (ASL) version – directed by Leila Hanaumi and performed by interpreter Giovanni Maucere – will also launch exclusively on the platform, continuing HBO’s expanding accessibility efforts.

The film’s release strategy has been aggressive. Just a month after opening, James Gunn announced the early digital availability on August 15. That decision, Gunn explained, was driven by the need to align story continuity with Peacemaker Season 2, a Max series that directly follows the events of Superman. This streaming synergy sets the stage for Gunn’s broader DCU rollout, where films and shows weave tightly together, much like Marvel’s earlier strategy.

Box office performance has sparked heated debates. While some critics point out that inflation-adjusted numbers make Superman less impressive than Man of Steel’s ticket sales, others argue that earning over $615 million today is a feat in itself, especially when most blockbusters struggle to clear half that figure. The domestic box office carried much of the weight, raising questions about why international audiences were less enthusiastic. Gunn himself has suggested that Superman’s distinctly American mythos resonates more strongly at home than abroad.

Still, the numbers have been enough to greenlight Gunn’s follow-up film, Man of Tomorrow. Unlike a straightforward sequel, Gunn describes it as a dual narrative centered as much on Lex Luthor as on Superman. The premise sees the two sworn enemies forced into an uneasy alliance against a larger, unnamed threat. Gunn has teased that production will begin in April 2026, targeting a July 9, 2027 release – an unusually quick turnaround for a blockbuster of this scale. He candidly admitted: “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to Luthor, sadly.”

This creative direction has divided audiences. While some fans are excited about giving Lex more narrative weight, others feel Superman himself was sidelined even in his own film, with too many scenes of vulnerability and too little of the traditional heroic spectacle. Critics have pointed to the limited screen time of Superman’s triumphs, an overly comedic CGI Krypto the dog, and casting choices that left Lex Luthor feeling underpowered. On the other hand, supporters argue Gunn’s humanizing approach sets this version apart from previous iterations, breaking away from Snyder’s darker vision.

For those who missed the theatrical run, the HBO Max debut provides another chance to judge for themselves. A linear HBO airing follows on September 20 at 8 p.m. ET, and a physical media release is already set for September 23, arriving in DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K editions. Looking ahead, Gunn’s interconnected DC slate keeps momentum rolling with Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface all scheduled for 2026, before Man of Tomorrow continues the new era in 2027. Love it or hate it, Superman is back at the center of pop culture – and HBO Max is betting that fans will want to return to his story again and again.
