Sony has officially announced that PlayStation 5 prices are going up by $50 in the U.S. starting August 21. This price hike will affect the standard PS5, the PS5 Digital Edition, and the new PS5 Pro model.
The base PS5, which includes a disc drive, will now cost $549.99, while the Digital Edition jumps to $499.99. The PS5 Pro will be priced at $749.99, marking a similar $50 increase.
Isabelle Tomatis, Sony’s Vice President of Global Marketing, explained the price adjustment, attributing it to the ongoing economic challenges faced by businesses worldwide. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21,” she stated.
The announcement comes amidst turbulent global markets, influenced by U.S. tariffs. Sony isn’t alone in this; other major gaming companies like Nintendo have also raised their prices. Just recently, Nintendo bumped the price of the original Nintendo Switch, and now Sony follows suit.
The timing is notable, as this announcement coincides with Gamescom, the major European gaming event where new product reveals and updates are happening. Sony had already raised PS5 prices earlier this year in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and this new price increase marks another wave in their strategy.
Interestingly, while Sony raised its prices, Microsoft opted not to announce the price of its new ROG Xbox Ally X during the same period, signaling the unpredictable market dynamics. Meanwhile, PlayStation accessories and prices in other regions remain unchanged for now.
For many, the increase in PS5 prices is frustrating, especially considering the console has been on the market for five years. Some users are already questioning whether it’s worth the investment at this stage or whether the industry-wide price hikes are more of a cash grab than a necessity.

At this point, we might as well buy consoles now and sell them later at a markup. Gotta find a silver lining in this mess
So much for ‘America first,’ huh? 🙄
