The good news? You’ll be able to experience it for free right out of the gate!

Skate’s early access will require an internet connection and an EA account to log in, which makes sense given the developer’s ambition to create a “living, breathing” multiplayer sandbox. The vision is for a constantly evolving world, where players can witness major changes to the in-game city over time, alongside live events and regular in-game activities. As the developer puts it, “big things will evolve, like changes to the city, and smaller things, like live events and activities that bring the community together.”

Today’s trailer gives us a first look at the multiplayer gameplay in action, with teams of skaters cruising the streets of San Vansterdam. The game’s open-world environment is filled with dynamic elements like traffic, and even custom-built objects suspended in the air that players can try to skate on. It’s an exciting preview of what’s to come.

Originally announced by EA in 2020, Skate’s development has been a slow burn, with the game previously available to fans in closed playtests. During these tests, microtransactions for cosmetic items were introduced, giving a hint at EA’s plans to monetize the game. However, Full Circle has clarified that all purchases will be reset at the start of early access, and any prior purchases will be refunded.

Skate’s return promises a return to the roots of the series, with gameplay reminiscent of the fan-favorite 2010 title Skate 3. IGN’s hands-on preview highlighted the game’s refined mechanics, a massive world to explore, and the open-ended “do what you want” vibe that made the franchise so beloved. While some may have reservations about the always-online nature of the game, many fans are excited to finally see the next chapter in the Skate saga.

I love the idea of a living world, but… private lobbies are a must! And can we get board customization like in the old games? I wanna ride my actual setup, not some generic board. 🛹
