Samsung appears ready to reshape the foldable phone market again – this time, quite literally. Recent patents filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) reveal that Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold smartphone – widely rumored to debut as the Galaxy Z TriFold – will feature not two, but three separate batteries.

Each section of the device will contain its own power cell, a move that hints at both engineering complexity and ambitions for superior endurance.

According to the patent sketches, the tri-fold design divides the phone into three segments: one housing the triple camera system, another containing the cover display, and a central section that forms the main folding spine. The smallest cell (T1) is placed behind the cameras, the largest cell (T2) occupies the central panel – which becomes the ‘core’ when folded – and the final medium-sized cell (T3) sits behind the cover screen. This modular battery layout might help balance power consumption across the three displays and hinges, reducing strain on a single cell and potentially extending the device’s lifespan.

Samsung has not yet disclosed exact capacities or charging speeds, but fans are expecting major improvements over the Galaxy Z Fold7’s relatively small 4,400 mAh battery and its modest 25W wired charging. Competing Chinese foldables have already crossed the 100W threshold, putting pressure on Samsung to raise its charging game. If the tri-fold truly carries three power units, even moderate individual capacities could combine for impressive total endurance – perhaps breaking the 5,000 mAh mark for the first time in Samsung’s foldable lineup.

Rumors about regional exclusivity also appear to be softening. Early leaks suggested that the Galaxy Z TriFold would remain limited to South Korea and China, but more recent reports hint at a potential global release, including a U.S. launch window possibly later this month. Alongside the TriFold, Samsung is reportedly preparing its first Android XR headset, codenamed Project Moohan, with pre-registrations starting in mid-October and a formal unveiling expected by October 22. If both devices debut in the same window, Samsung could be positioning itself for a powerful year-end hardware showcase.

While enthusiasts are eager to see how Samsung manages durability, hinge mechanics, and display creases across three folds, some users express a different dream – a simpler, sliding OLED screen phone with a cinematic 21:9 ratio for movie lovers. Still, the Galaxy Z TriFold represents Samsung’s most daring step yet in foldable innovation, a glimpse at what might be the next evolution of mobile form factors.
