Samsung Galaxy G Fold: Why the Tri-Fold Could Cost $3,000

The debate over Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold smartphone, rumored to be called the Galaxy G Fold, has intensified after polls suggested that many consumers would only consider it a fair buy at around $2,000.

However, insiders hint at a launch price closer to $3,000 – raising questions about whether such a device can succeed.

The Galaxy G Fold: Samsung’s Boldest Move Yet

Samsung has long been exploring foldable tech, but the tri-fold design marks an entirely new challenge. Following Huawei’s Mate XT – priced at nearly €3,500 – Samsung’s engineers are aiming for a device that unfolds into a true tablet-like screen while still offering flexibility to open partially. TM Roh, head of Samsung’s mobile division, confirmed the company is actively refining the product and considering a launch by the end of the year.

Why the High Price Tag?

There are three main reasons the Galaxy G Fold may cost far more than existing foldables. First, research and development. Unlike simply adding another hinge to the Z Fold series, this device must be engineered from scratch: three batteries, new hinge mechanics, and redesigned software to support the triple-fold form factor.

Second, exotic materials. Hinges require durable but lightweight alloys – sometimes even liquid metal or titanium. Displays rely on ultra-thin glass or non-Newtonian fluids, which change properties depending on force. These materials drive up both cost and manufacturing complexity.

Finally, low production volume. Samsung is unlikely to risk producing tri-folds at mass scale in the first generation. Limited runs mean higher per-unit costs as the enormous R&D investment is spread across fewer devices.

Do We Really Need a Tri-Fold?

That’s the million-dollar – or perhaps $3,000 – question. Adoption of foldables has been slower than expected, even after seven generations. Yet a tri-fold could solve one of their biggest weaknesses: awkward aspect ratios. Unfolded, it offers a near-perfect tablet experience for media, while still allowing smaller partial folds for multitasking.

But in the end, price dictates adoption. Samsung insiders themselves question whether enough buyers are ready for such a leap. If early adopters embrace the Galaxy G Fold, economies of scale may eventually push prices closer to the $2,000 sweet spot consumers want. Until then, the tri-fold may remain a niche luxury rather than a mainstream must-have.
