Russell T Davies Reflects on Doctor Who’s Legacy and His Own Creations

Russell T Davies, the showrunner behind Doctor Who, has expressed mixed feelings about the beloved sci-fi series. Reflecting on his time as head of the show, Davies acknowledged that while Doctor Who was pivotal in his career, it was never truly his to control. He commented, “I love Doctor Who, but I don’t own it. It’s not mine.” This sentiment, shared during an interview promoting his latest project, Tip Toe, reveals Davies’ deeper connection to his own creations, which include Queer as Folk, Cucumber, and It’s a Sin.

Although Doctor Who revived under his leadership, Davies admitted that he would be more remembered for his original work.

Tip Toe, described as a mix of Queer as Folk and Years and Years, holds a special place in his heart. “I do believe Queer as Folk, Cucumber, It’s a Sin, and Tip Toe are the ones that will be on my gravestone,” Davies said, further distancing himself from the iconic series that helped shape his career.

Despite his departure from Doctor Who Magazine, where he had previously shared his thoughts, Davies is staying tight-lipped about the future of the show. The Doctor Who franchise is currently in a state of limbo, with the show struggling with declining ratings and a lack of direction. After a tumultuous period marked by the departure of key actors and behind-the-scenes changes, the Doctor Who fandom is left wondering whether the show will continue or take a long break.

Some fans have called for the show to take a much-needed hiatus, hoping it will return refreshed and with new creative direction. With speculation mounting about Disney’s involvement in the show’s future, there are signs that the Doctor Who universe may evolve into something entirely different, depending on whether the production partners remain aligned.
