PlayStation fans might not have to wait long for another big reveal, as rumors suggest that a fresh State of Play presentation is set to arrive later this September. While the month already hosted one showcase dedicated entirely to 007 First Light, that event left many wondering if Sony had more up its sleeve.
Now, according to a new report from Insider-Gaming, insiders claim another stream is indeed on the horizon – and this time, the spotlight could fall on Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games’ highly anticipated project.
Since its dramatic reveal in 2021, Wolverine has remained largely shrouded in secrecy. We’ve seen plenty of chatter and even leaks after Insomniac suffered a major ransomware attack in 2023, but none of that data reflected the studio’s final vision. Developers often pivot in response to leaks, and many in the community believe Insomniac deliberately reshuffled plans to preserve surprises for fans. The lack of updates has been frustrating, but also suggests the studio is being meticulous about when and how to show its progress.
The timing of this rumor is striking. Beyond Ghost of Yotei this October, PlayStation’s roadmap looks surprisingly thin. We haven’t had a traditional multi-game PlayStation Showcase in over three years, raising questions about what first-party studios are preparing. A Wolverine appearance could finally give fans confidence that Sony has major exclusives brewing for the years ahead. Insomniac, fresh off Spider-Man’s critical and commercial success, is one of Sony’s most reliable developers, and four years of production makes it plausible that Wolverine is nearing a reveal-worthy state.
That doesn’t mean the game is arriving tomorrow. Big AAA productions often take five or more years to complete, and Wolverine’s tone – darker, more grounded, and far removed from the quippy web-slinging of Spider-Man – demands careful design. Still, speculation is growing that the project may not be too far from a first gameplay showcase. For fans, just catching a glimpse of Logan’s claws in action could be enough to reignite excitement around PlayStation’s future lineup.
Of course, until Sony officially confirms the date and content of the rumored event, this all remains speculation. Industry history is full of whispers that never materialized, and gamers have learned to keep expectations in check. Yet the idea of Wolverine stepping onto the State of Play stage this month is tantalizing. Whether it’s a cinematic teaser or a full gameplay slice, Insomniac’s take on Marvel’s most tortured mutant could be the moment PlayStation needs to remind everyone that its first-party firepower is still very much alive.
