Google’s annual summer showcase brought plenty of fresh tech, but one product stole the spotlight: the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
This is Google’s third attempt at a foldable phone, and unlike its predecessors, it arrives with a durability feature no other foldable has yet matched – a full IP68 rating.
Foldables typically come with some kind of water protection, but almost none guarantee dust resistance. Most models, such as the Oppo Find N5, carry an IPX8 certification, meaning they can handle water but not dust. Even Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 only hits IP48, offering partial dust protection. Google, however, has set a new benchmark by making its foldable completely dust-tight and resistant to fresh water immersion.
For those unfamiliar, IP ratings break down into two numbers: the first for dust and solids, the second for water. A “6” indicates the device is completely dustproof, while an “8” means it can survive being submerged in fresh water under controlled conditions. In short, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is designed to shrug off the kind of everyday threats – dirt, spills, rain – that might quickly ruin other foldables.
Of course, there are caveats. The IP68 standard doesn’t cover saltwater, chlorinated pools, or soapy coffee mishaps. And while the seals and gaskets inside the phone are designed to last, they can degrade over time. That’s why even the toughest phones are marketed as “water-resistant,” not “waterproof.”
Still, this is a milestone moment for foldables. With the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, buyers finally get the confidence that their expensive foldable won’t choke at the first encounter with dust or a splash of water. And if history is any guide, it won’t be long before rival brands race to catch up.
So yes, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold isn’t just another foldable – it’s shaping up to be one of the most rugged smartphones in its class.
