Obsidian returned to Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live with a fresh trailer for The Outer Worlds 2, focusing on its companions. True to the studio’s humor, the footage even joked about the lack of romance options, a deliberate choice by the developers who prefer no relationships at all over half-done ones.
Still, the sequel promises to be more ambitious in every way compared to the 2019 original.
The first game was developed under Private Division with a modest budget, but this time, Obsidian has full Microsoft backing. That support is showing in technical upgrades: PC players can expect NVIDIA DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and ray tracing out of the box. The developers are also doubling down on role-playing depth. Game Director Brandon Adler explained that players won’t be able to respec their characters mid-run, forcing meaningful choices that carry through the whole campaign.
Pricing stirred controversy earlier this year when pre-orders launched at $79.99. After fan backlash, Microsoft rolled the base cost back to $69.99, bringing relief to many. Despite the debates, anticipation is high – the game launches October 29 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. It will mark Obsidian’s third release this year after Avowed and Grounded 2.
With a bigger budget, stronger role-playing focus, and quirky presentation intact, The Outer Worlds 2 looks ready to expand the series’ reputation as one of the funniest and most distinct sci-fi RPGs on the market.
