Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Callie Hart’s dark fantasy novel Quicksilver is finally moving forward – and the author herself just gave fans a much-awaited update that suggests this might become one of Netflix’s boldest fantasy films yet.

Speaking to a packed audience in Melbourne while promoting her upcoming sequel Brimstone, Hart revealed that the team now has a completed script and has started searching for the perfect director to bring her twisted, romantic world to life.

“We have a script and it’s a good one,” Hart confirmed enthusiastically. “Now we’re thinking about who’s going to direct – and that’s such a fun stage to be at.”

When asked who her dream director might be, Hart didn’t hesitate to name two cinematic visionaries known for their gothic, mythic flair: Robert Eggers and Guillermo del Toro. “I want something dark, twisted, and weird,” she explained. “I don’t want anything normal.” For her, the goal isn’t just about who directs – it’s about finding someone who understands the soul of Quicksilver: “I want someone with a clear vision who’ll stay true to the story and make it look incredible – not something that ends up as a meme.”

Hart also teased the writer behind the adaptation, dropping hints that fans of major streaming hits might already know her work. “You’ve definitely watched shows she’s written,” Hart said, “and she’s phenomenal. She has such a sharp sense of humor, and that’s made its way into the script.”

Producing the project is Elizabeth Cantillon, whose credits include Alien: Romulus and The Love Hypothesis. Hart said her decision to partner with Cantillon came down to shared creative instincts: “I spoke with a lot of producers before choosing Elizabeth. She was the one whose vision aligned perfectly with mine – she understood how to keep it gritty, dark, and raw. She’s the only woman for this job.”

Quicksilver has been a phenomenon in the fantasy-romance world since its release in December 2024, selling over a million copies within six months. Its momentum on BookTok hasn’t slowed, where fans obsess over its blend of fae politics, romance, and sharp-edged world-building. The story follows Saeris, a skilled thief who is drawn into a realm of fae warriors and ancient magic. There she meets Kingfisher, a brooding and powerful fae warrior – the kind of man she swore she’d never trust. Together, they’re caught in the middle of a devastating war that blurs the line between love, power, and survival.

The film adaptation comes at a time when fantasy romance has become Hollywood’s new obsession. Amazon’s adaptation of Fourth Wing recently secured a new showrunner, Sony is developing a Blood and Ash series, and A Court of Thorns and Roses – the series that sparked the current wave – may soon find new life after Hulu reportedly dropped it. Rumors are swirling that author Sarah J. Maas might be collaborating with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment after the two were spotted having coffee together. Robbie, a self-professed fan of Maas’s novels, told Harper’s Bazaar she’d “see what she can do” about making the adaptation happen.

As for Quicksilver, Hart’s update gives fans plenty to buzz about. With a script ready and the hunt for a director underway, the next few months could be pivotal for the project. If Netflix manages to secure someone like Eggers or del Toro, the movie could stand apart from the glossy, romantic fantasy adaptations crowding the field – darker, stranger, and more unapologetically fierce. And if Hart’s confident tone is any hint, Quicksilver won’t just be another fantasy romance; it might redefine what that genre can look like on screen.
