Microsoft has confirmed that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the latest and most ambitious entry in its long-running simulation series, is officially coming to PlayStation 5. The announcement was made during the September 2025 State of Play showcase, accompanied by a striking trailer that highlighted the scope of the game’s world and technology.
The release date is locked in for December 8, 2025, placing one of Xbox’s crown jewels squarely on Sony’s console for the very first time.
This move is significant not just for PlayStation owners, but for the broader gaming industry. Microsoft has traditionally kept its biggest first-party franchises tied to Xbox and PC, yet in recent years the company has become more flexible, extending key titles like Sea of Thieves to other platforms. Flight Simulator’s arrival on PS5 continues that trend, suggesting Microsoft now sees value in building its franchises beyond console exclusivity and tapping into new audiences.
The PlayStation 5 version won’t be a stripped-down port. According to Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, the development team at Asobo Studio has integrated the unique features of the DualSense controller to enhance immersion. Adaptive triggers simulate resistance during takeoff, turbulence, and landings; ATC radio chatter comes directly through the controller’s speaker; while gyro support, lightbar interaction, and a customizable touchpad add layers of realism. These touches aim to make piloting an aircraft from your couch feel authentic and intuitive.
Another big addition, though not immediately available, is PlayStation VR2 support. A free update planned for 2026 will allow players to fully immerse themselves in the cockpit. Considering how VR has already transformed the PC version into a near-lifelike aviation training tool, this update could make the PS5 edition one of the most immersive experiences on the platform.
Importantly, PlayStation players will also benefit from the same free World Updates and Sim Updates that PC and Xbox users receive. This ensures that no matter which system you play on, you’ll always have the most up-to-date content, detailed landscapes, and evolving simulation features. It’s a refreshing commitment to parity that avoids fragmenting the community.
For fans who once thought buying an Xbox was the only way to experience the game, this announcement is a relief. The upcoming release not only broadens accessibility but also signals how console rivalries are shifting in today’s industry. With the skies opening up on PS5, the world of virtual aviation is about to welcome a whole new fleet of pilots.
