Marvel’s Wolverine has remained one of the most mysterious and eagerly awaited projects from Insomniac Games ever since its announcement at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase. The long silence surrounding the title has fueled both frustration and anticipation, especially after the devastating ransomware hack of Insomniac in late 2023, which exposed sensitive staff data and leaked confidential details of several upcoming projects. That breach not only disrupted development but reportedly had a heavy emotional toll on employees, delaying progress and pushing the game well past its rumored 2024–2025 release window.
Now, fresh industry chatter suggests that fans may not have to wait much longer. Insider Tom Henderson, a regular source of gaming scoops, hinted in his podcast that a new State of Play presentation toward the end of the month could finally bring the first substantial look at Marvel’s Wolverine.
Henderson explained that he had heard from a long-trusted source that the game’s reveal trailer is already finished and ready to roll. While not absolutely guaranteed for this State of Play, he speculated that if it doesn’t appear there, The Game Awards later this year would be another likely venue – especially given Geoff Keighley’s fondness for high-profile reveals.
Perhaps the most exciting piece of news, however, is that playtesters who have gotten their hands on early builds describe the game as “fantastic.” That single word has sent ripples of excitement through the community. While Henderson himself cautioned that insider leaks always carry uncertainty, his phrasing suggested genuine enthusiasm from those who have experienced the game firsthand. Given Insomniac’s track record with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, expectations are understandably sky-high.
Interestingly, the project has seen a shake-up in leadership during its development cycle. Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, originally announced as Creative Director and Game Director, were replaced last year by Marcus Smith and Mike Daly. Both Smith and Daly were instrumental in the success of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in 2021, a title celebrated for its polish and technical wizardry on PlayStation 5. Many fans see this as a positive sign, since Smith and Daly have proven they can deliver a visually striking, tightly tuned experience on Sony’s flagship console.
As for story or gameplay details, Insomniac has remained tight-lipped. All that’s clear so far is that Wolverine will be the star of the show, and speculation about tone points toward a darker, grittier narrative compared to the bright energy of Spider-Man. Bryan Intihar, the creative lead on both Spider-Man titles, has previously teased that a crossover between Wolverine and Spider-Man could happen down the line. If such an encounter occurs, it may be limited to cameos or post-launch connections rather than a major feature of Wolverine’s first outing.
Fans are understandably cautious. After years of unoptimized big-budget releases and live-service disappointments, people crave a game that simply delivers on its promise without technical fiascos. Wolverine’s reputation as a brutal, no-nonsense antihero also raises questions about gameplay – will Insomniac fully embrace his violence and maturity, or lean on a safer, mass-market approach? The studio’s past work suggests they can balance accessibility with intensity, but until the trailer drops, speculation reigns supreme.
For now, the best takeaway is this: the trailer exists, insiders are impressed, and a reveal is almost certainly imminent. If the rumors are true, Marvel’s Wolverine could mark the next major step in Sony’s lineup of blockbuster superhero games, carrying not just the weight of expectation but the hope of a fatigued gaming audience hungry for something raw, polished, and unforgettable.
