Marvel Rivals, the fast-rising superhero team brawler from NetEase, is about to expand its reach in a big way. Up until now, the game has been locked to current-generation consoles – namely PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S – but that’s about to change.
On September 12, 2025, Marvel Rivals will officially arrive on PlayStation 4, coinciding with the highly anticipated launch of Season 4: The Heart of the Dragon.
This announcement was confirmed with a brand-new cinematic trailer, where the PS4 logo appeared alongside the usual platforms. For many fans, this move feels like an unexpected gift, as the PS4 was largely assumed to be phased out of big new releases. Interestingly, Xbox One owners are still excluded from the party, at least for now, though the possibility of a later release hasn’t been entirely ruled out.
The timing of this expansion couldn’t be more significant. Marvel Rivals has already been one of the breakout titles since its debut in December 2024, gaining traction with its blend of competitive combat and cinematic superhero action. The addition of the PS4 player base could bring a massive boost in active users, especially considering how many gamers still haven’t made the leap to PS5 hardware. While Sony announced in June that monthly active PS5 players had finally surpassed PS4, millions of last-gen players remain who still represent a huge market for developers.
It’s worth noting that even mega-hit titles like Genshin Impact only recently began winding down PS4 support. This means Marvel Rivals is moving against the trend, giving loyal PS4 gamers another high-profile title to enjoy. By reaching backward instead of forward alone, NetEase is showing an unusual but savvy strategy: tapping into an enormous last-gen community while simultaneously keeping momentum on modern platforms.
Season 4 itself, The Heart of the Dragon, promises to add fresh narrative arcs, new character content, and expanded gameplay systems that should keep existing fans hooked while drawing in new players. With the PS4 opening its gates, Marvel Rivals seems poised to stretch its popularity even further – a move that could cement it as one of the defining multiplayer superhero games of this console generation.
