TT Games is shaking up its formula with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, a game that dares to strip away the usual hundred-character roster in favor of a much smaller, story-driven cast.
Instead of the 400+ options seen in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, players will only step into the boots of seven heroes: Batman, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul.
Each character comes with unique skills and gadgets – Batman’s Batclaw, Gordon’s foam sprayer, Catwoman’s whip – aiming to provide deeper, more distinct gameplay. Multiple unlockable costumes, from The Dark Knight to Rainbow Batman, will give fans cosmetic variety even if the roster is slim.
According to TT Games’ Jonathan Smith, this choice was intentional: the focus is on the Bat Family, Gotham, and Bruce Wayne’s journey, not on endless unlockables. Still, NPCs like Bat-Mite and Condiment King will appear to add comic relief, though Superman, Peacemaker, and other DC favorites are absent – at least for now.
The reaction has been divided. Some fans welcome a tighter, Arkham-inspired experience that prioritizes character depth over padding. Others argue that the huge unlockable rosters were part of the LEGO identity, and cutting down to seven makes the game feel less like LEGO and more like a Batman spinoff with bricks. Speculation about inevitable DLC has only fueled the debate.
Whether fans love or hate the idea, one thing is clear: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the boldest reinvention the LEGO series has attempted in years. It might just redefine what a LEGO game can be – for better or worse.
