Ghost Story Games unveiled details about a fresh system they call Villainy, an evolution of Levine’s long-promised “narrative LEGOs” idea. Unlike most games where the antagonist is preordained, here the villain is shaped directly by the player’s decisions.

The design draws inspiration from the Nemesis system of Shadow of Mordor, but takes it further. Players build relationships with the game’s “Big Three” central characters – helping some, ignoring others – and eventually one of them will turn against you. That neglected ally doesn’t just sulk; they evolve into the story’s nemesis, complete with new powers and strategies to challenge you. In other words, your villain isn’t written in advance. You create them through your choices.

Levine has been clear since the game’s early tease back in 2017: he wanted a system of “radical recognition,” where the world constantly reacts to your successes and failures. With Villainy, it looks like that vision is finally taking shape. According to Ghost Story, the recent milestone included their biggest playtest to date, and the team promises an enormous cast – over one hundred speaking roles – that should make every decision feel weighty.

It’s not just systems at play here either. The team shared new poster-style art for Judas, echoing the cinematic flair of Drew Struzan’s movie posters. And while a release date is still under wraps, the game is confirmed for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

For fans of immersive storytelling, Judas could become the next landmark in narrative-driven gaming. Whether Villainy proves to be as groundbreaking as it sounds remains to be seen – but it’s the kind of ambitious gamble few studios dare to make anymore.
