James Gunn has officially closed the door on Peacemaker Season 3 – but not on the character himself. As the co-CEO of DC Studios revealed, John Cena’s blunt, morally conflicted antihero is being retooled for something much larger within the new DC Universe (DCU). The second season of Peacemaker wrapped with a finale that cleverly sets the stage for Gunn’s 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, serving as a bridge between the series and the evolving cinematic universe.
Yet for fans hoping for another full season, the message is clear: the standalone series has completed its mission.
During a roundtable discussion ahead of the finale, Gunn was asked directly whether a third season was in the works. His response was unambiguous. “No,” he said. “This is about the wider DCU and other stories where the consequences of Season 2 will play out. Never say never, but for now, the focus is on the future of the DC Universe.” That doesn’t mean Peacemaker is done; rather, his story is moving beyond television, into the films and shows that will define the new interconnected DCU.
Gunn emphasized how personally attached he is to Cena’s character. “He’s really important to me,” Gunn admitted. “From the start, I said this job isn’t just about Batman or Superman. It’s about elevating DC’s smaller gems – turning characters like Peacemaker into cornerstone figures.” According to Gunn, Peacemaker embodies the kind of rough-edged, complex personality that helps humanize the larger, more mythic world of superheroes. It’s a theme that has run through his work since Guardians of the Galaxy, and one he seems determined to bring to the DCU’s next phase.
Speculation now swirls around when we’ll see Peacemaker again. Fans are betting on cameos in the 2026 Supergirl film or the 2027 Man of Tomorrow, but Gunn isn’t confirming anything. “That’s a secret!” he teased, offering just enough intrigue to keep audiences guessing. He also revealed that he had once discussed a potential crossover with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool – a concept that fizzled but still underscores how wild Gunn’s creative ambitions can get.
As DC transitions into its new cinematic era – with Supergirl, Clayface, and the long-awaited Lanterns series coming up – it’s clear that Peacemaker’s legacy is far from over. The brash, broken hero who once symbolized everything absurd about patriotism and violence is now being positioned as a key thread in a larger, riskier, and possibly more mature universe. Whether fans embrace that vision or not, Gunn’s message is simple: Peacemaker has evolved beyond his own show.
