James Gunn, the creative head now steering DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, is not only busy shaping the future of DC films but is also keeping a close eye on the gaming side of things. While his attention is mostly on cinema – especially with his upcoming Superman film – Gunn has revealed that there’s a particular DC game idea that excites him.
However, he stressed that everything is still in the early planning stages.
In a conversation with GamesRadar, Gunn explained that WB Games has seen some structural changes recently, leading to a focus on just four major brands: DC, Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, and Game of Thrones. With that realignment, some studios like Monolith Productions and Player First Games have been shut down, and the previously announced Wonder Woman game has been scrapped. Gunn admitted these shifts slowed progress, but he teased that one project stands out as particularly promising: “There’s been some slight movement on different things. We have a couple of smaller DC games coming out, but we’re also in early planning for bigger projects. One in particular I’m very excited about, but these things take time.”
For now, the only officially confirmed major release on the horizon is LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, unveiled during Gamescom ONL 2025. The game will launch on PC and consoles in 2026, marking the next significant appearance of a DC hero in gaming. Fans, meanwhile, continue to speculate on what Gunn’s mysterious passion project could be, throwing around ideas from character-driven spinoffs like Peacemaker to more grounded action titles in the style of RoboCop: Rogue City.
Whatever Gunn has in mind, it’s clear WB Games sees DC as a core pillar of its strategy. The road ahead may be uncertain, but fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming years as DC continues to expand its universe not just on the big screen, but in interactive form as well.
