iPhone 18 Pro’s Satellite 5G Could Spark an Apple–SpaceX Partnership

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro might mark the beginning of one of the most intriguing collaborations in tech history – a potential alliance between Apple and Elon Musk’s SpaceX. According to a report from The Information, Apple is preparing a major hardware leap that would enable next-generation satellite 5G connectivity, paving the way for the iPhone 18 Pro to connect directly to satellites without relying on ground-based networks. This capability could open the door to Starlink integration – a move that would dramatically change how iPhones stay connected in remote or emergency situations.

Until now, Apple’s satellite features have been quite limited.

The Emergency SOS via satellite, first introduced with the iPhone 14 and later supported by Apple Watch Ultra models, allows users to contact emergency services or share their location when there’s no cell signal. But Apple seems ready to move beyond simple emergencies and step into a new era of always-available global connectivity. The addition of satellite 5G means the iPhone 18 Pro could offer near-seamless internet coverage anywhere on the planet – from deserts and oceans to mountain peaks.

Reports suggest that SpaceX, already a leader in satellite technology, is positioning itself for such a partnership. Its latest Starlink satellites reportedly use the same radio spectrum Apple employs for its current satellite communications. That alignment could make technical integration far smoother than previous attempts, which faltered due to spectrum and regulatory differences. At the same time, Apple’s current satellite partner, Globalstar, appears to be in flux. Globalstar’s chairman, James Monroe, is reportedly looking to sell the company for around $10 billion – a move some analysts interpret as a sign that Apple wants more autonomy over its satellite future. With both Apple and Globalstar possibly seeking independence, SpaceX could be the perfect successor to handle Apple’s next-generation satellite ambitions.

If this partnership materializes, it could mark the start of a truly global 5G experience – no longer bound by traditional towers or ground-based infrastructure. SpaceX’s Starlink constellation already provides broadband access to rural and isolated regions worldwide, and merging that network with Apple’s ecosystem would represent a massive shift in mobile communication. Of course, not everyone will cheer for such a collaboration. Critics have expressed concern about Elon Musk’s growing influence across industries, warning that too much consolidation of technological power could have troubling implications.
