The upcoming Huawei Mate 80 series has become one of the most anticipated smartphone launches in China, with fresh leaks revealing a striking redesign to its rear camera layout. Although Huawei has not yet announced an official launch date, certifications in China confirm that the lineup is ready for release, and hands-on images now circulating online give us a good look at what’s coming.
Unlike the Mate 70 series, the new Mate 80 family introduces a circular camera island that’s been completely reworked.
The three lenses are arranged in a triangular formation within the circle, surrounded by a metallic steel ring that gives it a more premium, camera-like aesthetic. The top lens is rumored to be a periscope telephoto sensor, while the bottom two are expected to serve as the main and ultrawide cameras. The dual LED flash setup adds symmetry to the design – something Huawei fans will appreciate – and one of the flashes might even double as a color or light sensor for improved photo accuracy.
One of the leaked shots shows a bold yellow variant of the Mate 80, instantly drawing comparisons to the iconic Nokia Lumia 1020. This nostalgic reference didn’t go unnoticed by enthusiasts online, many of whom praised Huawei for reviving that design energy while blending it with modern materials and high-end finishes. Meanwhile, the Mate 80 Pro and Pro+ versions are said to feature upgraded Kirin chipsets, support for 100W fast charging, and possibly an integrated cooling fan – a feature rarely seen outside gaming phones.
The premium Mate 80 RS edition is rumored to push the boundaries further, boasting a titanium frame and a dual-layer OLED display. If true, Huawei seems determined to reclaim its position at the forefront of design innovation, even as competitors like Samsung and Honor refine rather than reinvent. In a world where most flagships look alike, Huawei’s circular symmetry, especially in that deep matte black version, feels refreshing. Whether the images are early prototypes or final designs, it’s clear the Mate 80 series isn’t afraid to stand out – and maybe that’s exactly what the smartphone industry needs right now.
