HMD Global seems ready to breathe new life into one of its most beloved rugged phones – the Nokia 800 Tough. Originally launched in 2019 as a nearly indestructible feature phone built for workers, adventurers, and anyone tired of fragile smartphones, this device is reportedly getting a refreshed second-generation edition.
According to a tipster on X (formerly Twitter), the new model will stay true to its roots, keeping its ultra-durable shell and signature design while quietly improving the essentials inside.
Visually, the phone will look almost identical to the original, maintaining the same sturdy frame, physical keypad, and IP68 water-and-dust resistance rating. However, HMD is finally modernizing the charging and software experience – the aging micro USB port will be replaced by a much faster and more universal USB-C connector. The operating system will also jump from KaiOS 2.5.2 to KaiOS 3.1, offering improved app compatibility, smoother performance, and better support for services like WhatsApp and Google Assistant.
That said, other hardware elements – including its MIL-STD-810G military-grade toughness – are expected to remain unchanged, emphasizing reliability over innovation. Some enthusiasts argue that HMD should take bolder steps, perhaps even revive the classic Matrix-style phones or release a new fan-favorite. Others, however, see this update as practical: a dependable backup phone that can survive drops, dust, and disasters, all while staying connected.
There’s no official word yet on pricing or availability, but if the leak proves true, the return of the 800 Tough could attract those nostalgic for the Nokia legacy or anyone in need of a no-nonsense companion device that just works – and survives.

relaunch nokia 1100 instead, unkillable battery and i could use it as a hammer 😎
no way, kaios 3.x only launched in US and hmd already quit there 🤷
if it ran kaios 4.0 i’d grab it as a backup, i just need whatsapp and solid battery
