The GPD Win 5 has officially arrived, and it’s making waves as the world’s most powerful gaming handheld, packing AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU.
This beast of a chip brings 16 Zen 5 cores, a 55-75W TDP range, and the Radeon 8060S iGPU with 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units – outmuscling every other iGPU on the market right now, even surpassing the NVIDIA RTX 4060 Mobile in synthetic benchmarks.
Unlike other Strix Point or Ryzen Z2-based handhelds, the Win 5 stands alone as the only Strix Halo-based portable to hit retail shelves. It supports up to 128 GB of blazing LPDDR5X 8000 MT/s RAM and up to 4 TB of SSD storage, with configurations starting at 32 GB/1 TB and scaling up. You also get both a Micro SD slot and a mini SSD slot for extra flexibility.
The 7-inch IPS display runs at 1920×1080 with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, 100% sRGB coverage, and AMD FreeSync Premium to keep visuals tear-free. Some gamers may wish for a higher resolution, but GPD is prioritizing performance and battery efficiency here. Speaking of which – the detachable 80Wh battery can be swapped for lighter weight (565g without, 915g with), or you can plug in the 180W AI PC adapter for full power at home.
Ergonomically, it’s smaller than many competitors at 267mm length, yet it still crams in premium controls: capacitive eSports-grade joysticks with Zero Dead Zone/Drift, Hall Effect triggers with hair-trigger 0.1mm actuation, and a robust port selection – WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, two USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2 + USB 4.0), and a 3.5mm audio jack.
Performance-wise, GPD claims the Win 5 rivals or even beats some high-end desktop CPUs while sipping far less power. With a price expected to land under $2000, it could pose a serious threat to premium gaming laptops, making it one of the most compelling handheld launches in recent years.
