Google Phone App Gets Fullscreen Calling Cards for More Personalization

Google is bringing a splash of personality to its trusty Phone app. Long known for its clean, no-fuss interface and reliable spam-blocking, the app is now adding a fresh customization option: fullscreen calling cards.

Instead of the standard small, centered profile picture during a call, you’ll soon be able to fill the entire background with a photo of your choice – much like iPhone’s contact posters introduced with iOS 17 in 2023.

Unlike Apple’s feature, Google’s take seems more personal than public. The fullscreen image is mainly for your own viewing pleasure, rather than something your contact will see. Still, it hints at the possibility that calling cards could evolve into a shared experience, similar to how Google Messages lets you control what others see.

When the update hits, opening a contact’s profile will prompt: “Try adding a calling card: Customize how [contact name] appears during calls.” Internally, Google calls these cards “patrick.” You can choose an image from your Camera, Gallery, or Google Photos, fine-tune its positioning, and even pick the font and color for the displayed name at the top of the incoming call screen.

The update also complements Google’s newer call-answering gestures, such as the horizontal swipe or single tap, making the entire call experience feel more fluid. While the rollout isn’t complete, some users have spotted the feature in the Phone by Google 188 beta, and Contacts 4.61 has already embraced the Material 3 Expressive design tweaks.

This enhancement follows a string of recent refinements to the Phone app and is clearly part of Google’s ongoing design refresh. For those who enjoy personalizing their devices, a fullscreen photo of a loved one, pet, or even a favorite meme appearing when they call could be a small but delightful everyday upgrade.
