In a sobering turn of events, Fantastic Pixel Castle – a studio helmed by veteran game designer Greg Street, best known for his work on World of Warcraft – finds itself at a crossroads. The studio’s highly anticipated debut project, a fantasy MMORPG codenamed Ghost, now hangs in the balance after NetEase abruptly withdrew its financial support.
The revelation came directly from Street via LinkedIn, where he expressed both gratitude and uncertainty as the team faces an uncertain future.
Street explained that while both NetEase and Fantastic Pixel Castle had been actively seeking a new publishing partner, the search has proven to be daunting. With the current market conditions and investor caution toward large-scale online projects, the likelihood of securing new funding is dwindling. As a result, the team has been advised to begin looking for new opportunities – a quiet acknowledgment that if no publisher steps in soon, the studio may have no choice but to shutter operations entirely. The leadership team, developers, and artists who poured years into Ghost could all be affected.
Ghost was designed to challenge the traditional MMO formula. Its unique concept revolved around two interconnected game worlds: public ‘Red Shards,’ which operated like standard online realms, and private ‘Blue Shards,’ initially conceived with survival mechanics before evolving into roguelike-inspired experiences. This approach aimed to give players unprecedented control over their gameplay style – offering both large-scale social play and smaller, more personal adventures. Street and his team envisioned Ghost as a bridge between community-driven worlds and intimate player-driven stories.
Despite these innovative ambitions, Ghost’s fate reflects the harsh reality facing many developers today. NetEase’s withdrawal has already impacted other promising projects, such as T-Minus Zero – a studio formed by ex-BioWare and Bethesda veterans – which also found its funding abruptly terminated earlier this year. The industry is clearly in flux, as even experienced creators struggle to maintain financial backing for ambitious projects in an increasingly risk-averse environment.
In his farewell-like message, Street expressed immense pride in his team, calling them “the best I’ve ever worked with.” He thanked playtesters and supporters who believed in Ghost, adding that he still hopes players will one day experience the world they built. Whether that hope survives depends on whether another publisher steps in to revive the dream. Until then, Ghost remains a haunting reminder of how fragile creativity can be in today’s gaming industry.

Bruh, another MMO bites the dust… why even bother announcing these if funding just vanishes? 😩
