Elon Musk has once again set his sights on Apple, accusing the tech giant of unfairly boosting OpenAI’s ChatGPT in its App Store rankings. According to Musk, Apple’s repeated editorial features and top placements for ChatGPT amount to favoritism that leaves no room for fair competition, hinting at an impending legal challenge under antitrust laws.
Musk’s frustration appears to stem from the fact that even after his own xAI released Grok 4, the AI tool couldn’t surpass ChatGPT’s visibility on the platform. 
While Musk hasn’t specified the exact legal route he’ll take, his comments strongly suggest he’ll frame it as an antitrust matter – an area where Apple has already faced scrutiny for years.
Adding fuel to the fire, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman swiftly responded to Musk’s remarks, calling them hypocritical. Altman alleged that Musk manipulates his own platforms – most notably X (formerly Twitter) – to push his content ahead of others, sharing an article claiming Musk implemented a “special system” to ensure users see his posts first. Altman’s jab was a pointed reminder of Musk’s own history of controlling the playing field when it suits him.
This clash is further complicated by their shared past: Musk co-founded OpenAI before severing ties and later suing the company over its transition from a non-profit to a for-profit business – a lawsuit still unresolved. For now, the verbal sparring between the two tech leaders has only intensified, and observers are bracing for the next chapter in this ongoing feud.
