Bungie has finally lifted the curtain on Destiny 2: Renegades, an expansion that boldly channels the galaxy far, far away. Shown off in a live-stream event, the gameplay reveal confirmed what fans had suspected since the first teaser earlier this year: this expansion leans heavily into Star Wars-style aesthetics, right down to glowing blades, imposing walkers, and ships that echo the silhouette of X-Wings.
The homage is deliberate, and it has sparked both excitement and skepticism across the community.
Scheduled for release on December 2, Renegades takes players into The Lawless Frontier, a dangerous region of space designed for high-stakes missions. Guardians will be tasked with smuggling runs, sabotage operations, and bounty hunting contracts. Bungie emphasized that all these activities can be tackled either solo or with a fireteam, maintaining the series’ trademark cooperative flexibility. Across three new planets and six distinct maps, the expansion reimagines familiar Destiny environments with a Star Wars-flavored twist, blending the franchise’s lore with recognizable galactic-war vibes.
Yet the update wasn’t just about hype for the future. Alongside the Renegades showcase, Bungie launched Ash & Iron, the first substantial update of Destiny 2’s current Year of Prophecy. Ash & Iron marks the return of the Plaguelands – an area many players haven’t visited since the original Destiny – and introduces a new three-player fireteam activity. The rewards track for the earlier expansion Edge of Fate also received a refresh, giving Guardians additional incentive to dive back in. And on September 27, Bungie plans to roll out a brand-new raid, The Desert Perpetual, designed as another test of skill and coordination.
Of course, the announcements come during a turbulent period for Bungie. Studio head Pete Parsons has retired after 23 years, with nearly a decade of leadership at the top. His departure closes a chapter marked by both ambitious expansions and public struggles, leaving fans curious about what direction the studio will take moving forward.
The Renegades reveal sparked plenty of chatter. For some, the Star Wars-inspired visuals feel like a fun crossover dream finally realized. For others, the move seems like a desperate attempt to graft onto a franchise that has itself faced criticism in recent years. Regardless, Bungie has ensured that Destiny 2 remains firmly in the spotlight as December approaches. Whether Renegades reinvigorates lapsed Guardians or fuels further debate, it’s clear that Bungie is still betting big on spectacle, risk-taking, and nostalgia-driven design.
