Nearly three decades after the disastrous release of Bubsy 3D, the orange bobcat mascot is making an unexpected comeback. 
Indie studio Fabraz, together with Atari, is reviving the series with Bubsy 4D – a brand-new 3D platformer that aims to rewrite the character’s legacy.
Once again, Bubsy faces off against the alien Woolies, but this time the story takes a twist: Earth’s sheep, empowered with alien technology, have rebelled to form the BaaBots. These mechanical sheep seize the mythical Golden Fleece, sparking a galactic chase across planets once ruled by the Woolies. Bubsy isn’t alone in this quest – familiar faces such as Terri, Terry, Virgil, and Oblivia are returning to join the chaotic ride.
Gameplay sticks to Bubsy’s roots with 3D movement, platforming, and collectibles, but introduces modern touches like online time trials and a new ‘hairball form’ transformation. It’s a mix of nostalgia and reinvention, with the developers leaning into Bubsy’s infamous reputation. “It’s been a wild ride to work on a sequel to Bubsy 3D, considering its infamous legacy,” said Fabraz’s Fabian Rastorfer, hinting that this time, the controls and mechanics have been carefully refined. According to Rastorfer, Bubsy’s move-set is more expressive and polished than ever before.
It’s an ironic twist of history: the franchise once dismissed as a relic of mascot platformer excess is now being given a second life. With Fabraz’s proven platforming chops, fans wonder if this long-running meme can transform into a genuine comeback.
Bubsy 4D is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and One, Nintendo Switch (both models), and PC at a later date.
