Blackbird Interactive Acquires Hardspace: Shipbreaker and Plans Multiple New Games

Blackbird Interactive, the Vancouver-based studio known for strategy hits like Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak and Crossfire: Legion, has officially acquired the rights to the acclaimed Hardspace: Shipbreaker IP from Focus Entertainment. The original 2022 release captivated players with its deeply satisfying dismantling gameplay, atmospheric country-inspired soundtrack, and sharp commentary on corporate exploitation.

Earning a stellar 9/10 from Wccftech, it became a go-to title for players seeking immersive, meditative challenges amid the grind of daily life.

Now, Blackbird plans to expand the franchise with multiple new projects already in development. While details remain under wraps, speculation is buzzing-could we see the IP evolve into a strategy spinoff, given the studio’s roots? Or will it double down on the ship-salvaging simulation that fans adore?

To bring players closer to the action, the team has launched the LYNX Pioneer Program. Those who pre-register on the official site will gain access to exclusive early playtests for future Hardspace and other original BBI titles, behind-the-scenes development updates, and opportunities to shape the games themselves. Contests and community events are also promised.

Blackbird’s move signals clear intent: they see untapped potential in Hardspace’s blend of storytelling, methodical gameplay, and biting socio-economic themes. Whether this leads to bigger, riskier projects-or an overreach in pursuit of profit-remains to be seen, but the next few years look pivotal for both the studio and the IP.
