Some long-awaited Siri upgrades are finally making their way to your iPhone sooner than expected. Back in 2024, Apple showcased a bold new vision for Siri as part of its Apple Intelligence initiative – a voice assistant capable of handling complex tasks from a single spoken command.
While that futuristic version still hasn’t arrived, Apple has been quietly preparing a meaningful update that’s set to roll out in the spring of next year.
According to Apple insider Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the company is making major enhancements to its App Intents framework. These upgrades will give Siri the ability to perform more practical, everyday operations, such as:
- Commenting on a post
- Finding, editing, and sending a specific image
- Adding items to a shopping cart
- Logging in to an app
Although this is still far from the deep integration Apple initially teased – like digging through messages, emails, or photos for ultra-specific information – it’s a significant leap from Siri’s current limitations. Apple intends to heavily promote these new capabilities, but it’s also moving cautiously to avoid potential risks. For example, the company is wary of letting Siri interact with sensitive apps like banking or health tools, where a wrong command could have serious consequences.
Right now, many Siri requests are handled via ChatGPT integration. Meanwhile, Samsung has taken a similar approach, with Galaxy AI on devices like the Galaxy S25 powered by Google’s Gemini AI model. Gemini’s rapid improvements have made AI experiences on Pixel 9 and Galaxy devices more advanced than on Apple’s iPhone 16. That’s why the upcoming App Intents update is so critical – it’s the first step toward a broader Siri overhaul Apple urgently needs.
