Apple is preparing a major Siri overhaul, set to debut with iOS 26.4 in spring next year, and it could redefine how we interact with our iPhones.
The centerpiece of this upgrade is App Intents, allowing Siri to perform specific in-app actions through voice commands – a leap forward from its current limitations.
Originally planned for iOS 18.4 this year, the rollout was delayed due to significant engineering challenges. According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the release is now expected between March and April, with Apple aiming to pair the feature with a broader Siri infrastructure revamp.
App Intents promises deeper integration with third-party apps, enabling Siri to handle complex tasks like booking tickets, sending messages in specific chat apps, or adjusting settings without manual input. However, Apple engineers are still ironing out issues to ensure accuracy, especially in sensitive areas like banking or health apps, where errors could have serious consequences. These technical hurdles have already forced Apple to consider excluding some high-risk categories from launch.
The delays have given rivals like Google an opportunity to highlight their own AI assistants, with Pixel 10 promotions already seizing the moment. And the success of Siri’s new powers will heavily depend on developer adoption – without widespread third-party integration, the improvements could go largely unnoticed.
Despite the challenges, Apple’s vision for Siri is ambitious. If App Intents gains traction, it could usher in a more natural, powerful, and personalized voice assistant experience, fundamentally changing how users interact with their devices.
