Apple’s M6 MacBook Pro Base Model May Skip OLED and Slimmer Design, Leak Suggests

Apple’s upcoming 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro is shaping up to be one of the company’s most interesting – and perhaps most controversial – laptops in years. According to new leaks and identifier evidence uncovered by YouTuber Vadim Yuryev, the base model may not receive the highly anticipated OLED display or the slimmer chassis that many users were expecting. Instead, those upgrades appear reserved for the higher-end versions, effectively pushing users who want the latest tech to spend more.

Yuryev’s findings reveal that the base M6 MacBook Pro, labeled internally as model J804, will retain its mini-LED panel.

Meanwhile, another variant identified as K116 seems to be the true OLED upgrade, likely representing the pricier Pro and Max versions. This aligns with Apple’s long-standing strategy of differentiating product tiers – where top-tier configurations receive not just faster chips, but also exclusive design and display perks.

While it’s easy to be disappointed, the mini-LED display on the current MacBook Pro remains among the best in the market. It offers high brightness, excellent contrast, and precise color accuracy. Still, OLED brings the advantage of true blacks, potentially thinner bezels, and improved power efficiency – features Apple enthusiasts have been craving. The catch? These benefits may be locked behind a higher price tag, creating a clear divide between the base and premium M6 models.

Beyond displays, the leak hints at a broader hardware shift. Apple is rumored to be redesigning its M6 chip architecture to separate CPU and GPU blocks, a move that could drastically improve thermal performance and scalability. However, such structural changes may also explain why the M6 Pro and M6 Max variants are expected to arrive only in 2027, a year after the base M6 launch. This delay mirrors what happened with the M5 generation, which saw the higher-end versions postponed for similar engineering reasons.

From a business standpoint, Apple’s decision makes perfect sense: offer a strong but slightly limited base model to attract general users, and keep the truly premium experience for those willing to invest more. Yet from a consumer’s perspective, it feels like another round of calculated upselling – especially since OLED and design refinements were widely expected across the entire lineup.

For now, all signs point to the M5 MacBook Pro launching sooner, possibly within the year. The M6 family, however, looks poised to push Apple’s segmentation strategy even further, blurring the line between innovation and marketing finesse. If Yuryev’s identifiers prove accurate, the base 14-inch model may end up being a polished yet conservative continuation – powerful and refined, but without the groundbreaking OLED leap many fans were hoping for.

Why not just give OLED to all models? It’s 2025, not 2015
