Android 17 Codename Is ‘Cinnamon Bun’ – Here’s Why

Google’s long-running tradition of giving internal dessert-themed codenames to Android versions continues, and this time Android 17 is going all sweet and cozy with the name “Cinnamon Bun”. The info comes from a reliable source inside Google and was first reported by Android Authority.

If you’ve been following the naming game, you might recall classics like Cupcake, KitKat, Oreo, and Pie.

The tradition went private years ago, but internally the sweet names never stopped. Here’s a quick recap of the past ones: from early treats like Cupcake (1.5) and Donut (1.6) to recent goodies like Vanilla Ice Cream (Android 15) and Baklava (Android 16).

So why not something starting with a “W” after Baklava? The answer lies in Google’s shift from the old branch-based development model to a modern “Trunk Stable” approach. This change, finalized with Android 14 QPR2, reset build IDs, starting them with “A” in 2024. By then, Android 15 already had its Vanilla Ice Cream codename, so the naming ‘reset’ had to wait until the “B” builds of 2025, which brought us Baklava for Android 16. Now with build IDs rolling over to “C,” Google has gone for Cinnamon Bun-probably because Cupcake was already claimed way back in 2009.

While these codenames no longer play a role in public marketing, they’re still a fun nod to Android’s quirky past. And hey, Cinnamon Bun feels warm, sweet, and maybe just a little nostalgic. Expect Android 17 to arrive around June 2026-and yes, you can already start guessing what dessert Android 18 might bring.
