AMD has officially confirmed that its new Radeon RX 9060 graphics card will, at least for now, remain an OEM-exclusive option.

That means the only way to get one is by purchasing a pre-built system. However, the company hinted that a retail release may be considered later, potentially expanding the RDNA 4 lineup for budget-conscious gamers.

The RX 9060, based on a trimmed-down Navi 44 die, features 1,792 stream processors and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. It quietly launched about two weeks ago as a successor to the RX 7600, but unlike the higher-tier RX 9060 XT, it does not carry the ‘XT’ branding. According to AMD, this move was partly to avoid confusion with the RX 9060 XT 8 GB and 16 GB models, which share identical specs aside from VRAM capacity. System integrators have already faced criticism for selling pre-builts that disguise the 8 GB XT variant as its 16 GB sibling.

By keeping the RX 9060 locked to OEMs, AMD says it is supporting its partners in the pre-built market. Still, enthusiasts argue that the card could find a strong audience at retail if priced competitively. The RX 9060 XT 8 GB currently starts around $300, often discounted due to weaker demand, while the RX 9060 would likely target a $249–$269 price point if it ever hits shelves.

The ongoing naming issues highlight the GPU industry’s broader problem of confusing product stacks. Some gamers already feel AMD has taken a page from Nvidia’s playbook by stretching naming conventions to justify higher pricing. If AMD decides to push the RX 9060 into the retail space, clarity around branding and VRAM differences will be critical to avoid misleading buyers.

For now, those hoping to slot the RX 9060 into their own custom builds will need to wait. Until AMD makes its decision, the GPU remains a pre-built exclusive – a strategy that might serve OEMs but leaves DIY builders on the sidelines.
