Google is quietly rolling out one of the most requested features for its smartphones: native call recording on older Pixel models. Until now, the fully integrated recorder inside the Google Phone app was effectively limited to newer devices like the Pixel 6 series and up in many regions.

With the latest stable Google Phone app update (version 198 and newer), Google is finally unlocking the same call recording experience for older Pixels that are running Android 14 or later.

Enabling the feature is straightforward. Open the Phone app, head into Settings, scroll to the Call Assist section, and you should see a Call Recording toggle. Once activated, you can either start recording manually from the dialer interface while you are on a call, or configure automatic rules. These rules let you record calls from unknown numbers, as well as always record conversations with specific contacts that you select. It is a powerful upgrade for anyone who needs to keep track of support calls, business conversations, or verbal agreements.

Of course, it is important to remember that call recording laws vary widely between countries and even between states. In some regions you only need your own consent to record, while in others all participants must be informed. Google typically surfaces short warnings and notifications depending on local regulations, but ultimately it is still the user’s responsibility to respect privacy rules when using this feature.

The November Pixel Feature Drop goes beyond simple recording, too. Google is also expanding its AI-powered Call Notes suite to more markets, including Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and Japan. Call Notes can automatically create transcriptions of your conversations and then generate concise summaries, turning long phone calls into quick bullet points you can review later. This is especially useful for users who often discuss work tasks, appointments, or instructions over the phone and do not want to manually write everything down.

By combining classic call recording with AI tools like transcription and summaries, Google is turning the humble Phone app into a serious productivity and documentation tool for Pixel owners. Whether you are using a newer Pixel or an older model that has just gained these capabilities with Android 14 and the latest Phone app update, your device is now far better equipped to help you remember what was said, when it was said, and by whom.
