Sony is extending the PlayStation ecosystem beyond the living-room TV and straight onto the desk with a new 27-inch PlayStation Gaming Monitor.

Designed by Sony Interactive Entertainment specifically with PS5 and PS5 Pro owners in mind, this display aims to be a dedicated command center for console and PC players who prefer gaming at an arm’s length rather than from the couch.

At the heart of the monitor is a 27-inch IPS panel with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. While Sony markets PS5 heavily as a 4K-capable console, here the company is clearly betting on 1440p as the sweet spot for desktop gaming: sharp enough on a smaller screen, but light enough on the hardware to sustain higher frame rates. The panel supports HDR, and Auto HDR tone mapping on PS5 and PS5 Pro automatically adjusts HDR settings during setup, so players get vivid contrast and richer colors without digging through menus.

Refresh rate is another major selling point. On PS5 and PS5 Pro, the monitor supports variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz to deliver smoother animation and reduce tearing in supported titles. Hooked to a compatible PC or Mac, the refresh rate can climb up to 240 Hz, giving competitive gamers a much more responsive experience in fast-paced shooters and esports titles.

Sony is also leaning into practicality. The PlayStation Gaming Monitor includes an integrated hook that doubles as a stand and charging spot for a DualSense controller, keeping the desk a bit cleaner and your gamepad within reach. Connectivity covers the essentials and then some: two HDMI 2.1 ports for consoles, one DisplayPort 1.4 for PCs, two USB-A ports for accessories, and a USB-C port that can work with PlayStation Link adapters or other devices

. Built-in stereo speakers and a 3.5 mm headphone jack round out the audio options, so the display is ready to go out of the box whether you prefer speakers or a wired headset.

The resolution choice, however, is already sparking debate among PlayStation fans. Some users expected Sony’s own branded monitor to push a native 4K panel to match the way PS5 is advertised. For them, a 1440p (often called “2K”) screen feels like a compromise – especially if the final price lands in what many expect to be a premium range. In community discussions, early guesses for the launch price hover around the $500 mark, and more than a few players are questioning whether that kind of money makes sense for a 1440p monitor when 4K options continue to drop in price.

On the other hand, there’s a solid argument for Sony’s strategy. At 27 inches, 1440p already looks very sharp at typical desktop viewing distances, and the lower resolution gives developers and hardware more headroom to hit 120 fps consistently on PS5 and even higher frame rates on PC. For competitive players, a high-refresh 1440p monitor is often preferred over a slower 4K screen, and Sony’s tight integration with PS5 – from Auto HDR tone mapping to VRR over HDMI 2.1 – makes this display more plug-and-play than many generic options.

Availability is currently confirmed for 2026 in the US and Japan, with more regions likely to follow later. Sony has not yet announced official pricing, leaving room for speculation and skepticism. If the PlayStation Gaming Monitor lands at a reasonable price, it could become the default choice for PS5 owners building a compact desktop setup. If it launches at a significantly higher price point, though, the combination of 1440p resolution and rumored premium cost may limit its appeal to the most dedicated fans of the brand.
