Nintendo has confirmed that the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will debut in a dedicated Nintendo Direct this Wednesday, November 12, at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m.
ET. Unlike a typical Direct, Nintendo is stating up front that there will be no video game announcements – the entire presentation exists to premiere the film’s maiden trailer. You’ll be able to watch it through the Nintendo Today! app or on YouTube.
When and where to watch
The movie-focused Direct airs on Wednesday, November 12 at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET. Nintendo hasn’t shared a runtime and hasn’t indicated whether there will be additional segments beyond the trailer itself. The safe bet is a brief intro, the trailer, and perhaps a closing card with credits or a short message from the filmmakers.
No games, all cinema
Nintendo is managing expectations clearly: this is about the film, not surprise game reveals. If you’re hoping for last-minute updates on winter releases or 2026 roadmaps, you’ll need to keep those hopes parked. That said, a movie this large – produced with Illumination – justifies its own spotlight. The first teaser during September’s Direct played coy (Mario snoozing, then a starry ascent and title card). Now, the studio is ready to show what a full-on Galaxy adventure looks like on the big screen.
What the trailer might show
Fans are bracing for a tour of the series’ cosmic iconography: the Comet Observatory, Lumas, and the balletic gravity set pieces that defined the games. Expect a more substantial look at Rosalina, who remains the gravitational center of Galaxy’s lore, along with hints of Peach’s backstory if rumors pan out. Merchandise leaks have pointed to Yoshi’s inclusion, and chatter around Bowser Jr. and Rosalina has only intensified; even if casting and character roles stay under wraps, a silhouette or stinger could send speculation into orbit.
The Galaxy blueprint: a universe that reboots
One reason the Galaxy era thrives on theories is its cosmic reset motif. The first game famously ends on a rebirth of the universe – a narrative swing that, in fan circles, essentially authorized a soft multiverse. In that framework, Rosalina becomes a kind of cosmic steward, the franchise’s closest analogue to a trickster-guardian figure keeping timelines tidy. If the movie leans into that metaphysics, it opens the door to playful continuity rewrites, cameos across eras, and star-savvy nods to other Nintendo mythologies.
Easter eggs and cross-franchise winks
Keep an eye on the sky. In the storybook ephemera of Galaxy, comet silhouettes and night-sky motifs often echo other Nintendo imagery; fans have long compared one comet to the menacing moon of Majora’s Mask. With a live-action Zelda film on the horizon, a sly visual rhyme here would ignite message boards without committing to any formal crossover. Expect the trailer to walk that fine line – suggestive, not definitive.
Voice cast speculation is already loud
Illumination and Nintendo are famously tight-lipped, but the rumor mill is spinning: Bowser Jr. voice bets range from high-energy stars to quick-witted younger leads, while Rosalina predictions skew toward actors who can balance warmth with cosmic gravitas. None of this is confirmed, of course, yet a single line in the trailer could become the night’s biggest headline.
The discourse: movies vs. marketing for games
Not everyone is thrilled about a movie-only Direct. Some fans would prefer Nintendo spend this week amplifying upcoming releases, especially with Metroid Prime 4 entering the conversation for December. Others argue a focused film rollout keeps game news uncluttered and, crucially, preserves surprise. There’s also a sizable group who simply don’t want much more shown – after the 2023 film, they feel the brand has earned trust, and less pre-release footage means more delight in theaters.
Release date and what’s next
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is slated to hit theaters on April 3, 2026. If this Direct mirrors the cadence of the previous Mario film’s campaign, expect a second trailer closer to spring 2026 and a steady drumbeat of character posters and soundtrack teases. For now, this week’s debut is about tone-setting: starry scale, playful physics, and a story that can hold both nostalgia and the cosmic wonder that made Galaxy a classic. Whether you tune in for lore, laughs, or just Lumas, the next era of Mario on film is about to lift off.

A Direct with zero game news and 100% Chris Pratt energy. Bold strategy, Cotton. 🙃
