WhatsApp has finally landed on Apple Watch, bringing a genuine wrist-native experience instead of the old notification mirroring many users lived with.
The official app focuses on the things you actually do most in chat: reading, glancing, reacting, and firing off a quick reply – all without digging out your iPhone.
Once installed, the app lets you read entire messages rather than the short previews that used to truncate conversations. You can also scroll back to see more of your recent chat history, which makes catching up during a commute or in a meeting far less awkward. When you need to respond, you can record and send voice messages right from the watch, or use quick emoji reactions for those moments when a thumbs-up or heart says it all. Visual content looks surprisingly good too: the app displays high-resolution images and stickers on the watch’s screen, so shared photos and meme packs aren’t reduced to blurry placeholders.
Calling remains limited due to platform constraints. You can’t place or answer WhatsApp calls on the watch itself, but you’ll still see who’s calling at a glance, which is handy when your phone is in a pocket or bag. Importantly, WhatsApp’s hallmark end-to-end encryption applies here as well, keeping messages and media protected across devices.
WhatsApp says this is only the start, with more features planned as the app matures. For now, compatibility is straightforward: Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or newer is supported. If you’ve been waiting for a simple, secure way to keep up with chats on your wrist – reading full threads, sending quick voice replies, and reacting in seconds – this first release already delivers the essentials while leaving room for the platform to grow.

Installed on mom’s Series 4 – she can read the whole convo now, not just snippets!
Nice start, but where are message drafts and better dictation? 😅
