Rockstar Games, the studio behind the world-renowned Grand Theft Auto (GTA) franchise, has come under fire this week after firing between 30 and 40 employees at its UK and Canada offices. Despite being financially stable, the layoffs seem to be linked to a push from the employees to unionize.
Rockstar Games Faces Accusations of Union Busting After Firing Employees Who Sought to Unionize
This move has sparked accusations of union busting, with many arguing that Rockstar is taking drastic measures to undermine workers’ rights and prevent them from organizing.

The news was first broken by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which represents the fired employees. The union has been vocal in condemning the actions of Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Alex Marshall, the IWGB president, released a statement condemning Rockstar’s decision. ‘Rockstar has just carried out the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry,’ Marshall said. ‘This flagrant contempt for the law and for the lives of the workers who bring in their billions is an insult to their fans and the global industry.’ He emphasized that despite these efforts to quash the movement, the Rockstar Union remains strong and committed to improving working conditions for its members.

Spring Mcparlin-Jones, Chair of the IWGB Game Workers Union, added further criticism, pointing to the staggering financial success of the GTA franchise. ‘Next year, GTA VI is expected to make upwards of $10 billion. That’s enough to end world hunger for a year,’ she said, expressing frustration that such an affluent company would attack its own workers in such a manner. She added that this move sends a ‘shocking message’ that profit is more important than the well-being of the people behind the games that millions love.

The situation is made even more complicated by the statements from Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games. Alan Lewis, the head of global corporate communications at Take-Two, defended Rockstar’s actions, stating that the employees were dismissed for ‘gross misconduct.’ He added that Take-Two fully supports Rockstar’s stance on the matter. This response has done little to quell the growing anger from union representatives and workers in the industry.

Unionization in the video game industry has been a rising trend over the last few years. Many major studios have seen similar efforts, including Blizzard Albany, Raven Software, and Blizzard Irvine. Even some smaller studios, like ZA/UM, which developed the critically acclaimed game ‘Disco Elysium,’ have unionized with the support of the IWGB. The growing number of unionization efforts highlights the increasing demand for better working conditions in a notoriously demanding industry.

In a bizarre twist, the allegations against Rockstar come just as the company prepares for the highly anticipated release of GTA VI. Slated for release on May 26, 2026, the game is expected to be one of the highest-grossing video games of all time, with some estimates putting its revenue potential at over $10 billion. This could potentially make it one of the most profitable video games ever created, further highlighting the disparity between Rockstar’s enormous financial success and the working conditions of its employees.

For many, the recent layoffs are a stark reminder of the inequalities within the gaming industry. While studios rake in billions from popular titles like GTA and Red Dead Redemption, the workers who bring these games to life continue to fight for fair pay and better working conditions. It remains to be seen how this situation will play out, but with union support growing, the fight for workers’ rights in the gaming industry is far from over.

Stop all this whining about workers. Just make better games. Everyone’s just salty that they didn’t get to work on GTA 😂
