Things are about to get even more delightfully chaotic for fans of body-swapping comedies. Disney+ has confirmed that Freakier Friday – the long-awaited sequel to 2003’s beloved Freaky Friday – will officially hit the streaming platform on November 12. Ironically, that’s a Wednesday, not a Friday, but as fans have learned, life’s surprises rarely follow the rules.
The announcement instantly reignited excitement among longtime viewers eager to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite on screen after more than two decades.
The film, which premiered in theaters in August, turned out to be a major box office success story. With a production budget of roughly $42 million, Freakier Friday grossed over $94 million globally – a clear sign that the audience’s nostalgia for the 2003 classic hasn’t faded. Much of that love comes from the original’s charm, humor, and heart. The 2003 version itself was the third adaptation of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, cementing its status as a cultural touchstone for a new generation of viewers who grew up quoting Lohan’s sarcastic one-liners and Curtis’s hilariously frazzled mother persona.
Jamie Lee Curtis has often spoken about how pivotal the first Freaky Friday became in her career. In the film’s new behind-the-scenes featurette, she reflected on that experience, saying, “It was such an unexpected turn in my professional life – suddenly I was part of something that connected with families all over the world.” For Curtis, the movie’s blend of physical comedy and emotional depth became a defining moment that proved she could shift effortlessly between genres.
Chad Michael Murray, who returns to the sequel, shared his own sense of nostalgia. “I was just starting out when we made the first one,” he recalled. “Working with Jamie Lee and Lindsay was surreal. It’s wild to think how many people still tell me they grew up with that movie.” Lohan, too, fondly remembers the first film’s energy: “We were laughing constantly, just having fun every day. It didn’t feel like work – it felt like summer camp with cameras.”
This time around, Freakier Friday takes the generational humor up a notch. The plot finds Anna (Lohan) now grown up and dealing with the chaos of family life when she suddenly swaps bodies with her own daughter – a meta twist that adds both humor and heart to the mix. Alongside returning cast members Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao, the sequel introduces fresh faces Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Sophia Hammons, and Julia Butters. Together, they bridge generations of fans while proving that the magic of body-swapping comedy never really goes out of style.
With its November 12 streaming debut on Disney+, Freakier Friday promises to deliver both a wave of nostalgia and plenty of new laughs – a perfect mix of sentimentality and slapstick for anyone who ever wished, just for a day, they could walk in someone else’s shoes.
