It’s barely been a few weeks since the first smartphones powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 appeared on the market, but leaks are already setting the stage for its successor – the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. According to early reports, this next-generation chip could debut in September 2026, built using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process.
If that timeline holds, we’re looking at a major leap forward in efficiency, thermal management, and raw performance.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is rumored to introduce support for LPDDR6 RAM and blazing-fast UFS 5.0 storage, both of which promise a significant step up in data transfer speeds and multitasking performance. These upgrades will likely make 2026 flagships even more expensive, as manufacturers push the limits of mobile computing. Early whispers suggest Qualcomm’s focus this time is on power efficiency as much as performance, aiming for sustained speed under heavy loads – the kind of consistency gamers and power users crave.
Still, not everyone is convinced. Some users argue that even the Gen 3 or Gen 5 chips already deliver more power than most people need. With prices soaring past $1,500 for flagship phones, the question remains whether incremental performance boosts are truly worth it. Others defend the innovation race, pointing out that each generation also enhances AI capabilities, camera processing, and connectivity – improvements that go beyond mere benchmark numbers.
There’s also speculation about camera upgrades tied to the 8 Elite Gen 6 platform, potentially enabling 8K video recording with better energy efficiency and real-time AI enhancements. And with TSMC’s 2nm process promising up to 30% lower power consumption, Qualcomm might finally address one of the main criticisms of the Gen 5 chip: high heat output during peak performance.
Still, as one commenter joked, “If you keep waiting for the next chip, you’ll never buy a phone.” Whether you’re holding on to a Galaxy S21 FE or sporting the latest Gen 5 device, the 8 Elite Gen 6 sounds like another bold stride toward the limits of smartphone performance – and possibly your wallet too.

the 2nm process sounds insane but my wallet is already crying 😂
Gen 6 with LPDDR6 + UFS 5.0 will be a beast… also super expensive 💸
