Universal Pictures is revving the pastel engines once again – Michael B. Jordan is reportedly in early talks to take on the iconic role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in the upcoming Miami Vice reboot.

The project aims to return to the neon-drenched glamour and moral ambiguity of mid-1980s Miami, the same era that made the original NBC series a cultural landmark.

According to Variety, the film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski – known for Top Gun: Maverick and TRON: Legacy – and will be shot in IMAX, promising an experience that’s as sleek as a Ferrari Daytona roaring through Ocean Drive. The movie, set for release on August 6, 2027, is described as a period piece, bringing back the iconic blend of high fashion, synth beats, and dangerous undercover missions that defined the original series.

For those who remember, the 1984 pilot introduced us to Ricardo Tubbs, a New York cop chasing his brother’s killer to Miami, where he crosses paths with detective James “Sonny” Crockett. The duo’s uneasy alliance evolves into one of television’s most stylish partnerships. Philip Michael Thomas first portrayed Tubbs, while Jamie Foxx filled the role in Michael Mann’s 2006 film adaptation. The new version, however, plans to channel the gritty yet glamorous spirit of the 1980s rather than modernize it again. Casting for Crockett remains unannounced, but fans are already speculating – some even campaigning for Pedro Pascal to take the wheel.

Jordan, known for his performances in Creed and Black Panther, is also attached to a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. His casting could inject the right balance of charm and intensity that Tubbs demands – though not everyone agrees. While many fans praise his charisma and box-office presence, others question whether he can bring something new to the role or if he’ll just deliver another variation of his familiar tough-guy persona. Either way, Miami Vice seems poised to make another stylish return to the big screen, with the same mix of speedboats, suits, and swagger that made it unforgettable four decades ago.
