The beloved 2003 cult classic The Simpsons: Hit & Run has just received an unexpected futuristic twist. A talented group of modders has rebuilt the entire experience as Futurama Hit & Run – a fan-made crossover that blends Springfield’s chaotic open-world antics with the sci-fi absurdity of New New York.
The result is both nostalgic and refreshingly inventive, and even the original game’s lead designer, Joe McGinn, is singing its praises.
Released as a free demo, Futurama Hit & Run transforms the familiar sandbox into a bustling, neon cityscape straight out of Matt Groening’s other animated masterpiece. Players take control of Fry, darting through the streets of New New York, completing missions for Bender, Professor Farnsworth, and Dr. Zoidberg. The gameplay feels comfortingly familiar – part chaotic driving, part slapstick adventure – but with an interplanetary twist. Fry can zip around in a hover car, evade hover-cops, and escort Bender back to Planet Express in a chase that feels both ridiculous and cinematic. Though true flight isn’t yet implemented, the developers have hinted that it might make its way into future updates.
The demo currently includes four story missions, a handful of street races, unlockable vehicles, costumes, and plenty of Easter eggs for devoted fans to discover. Perhaps the most ambitious aspect of the project is its voice work: for now, the mod uses AI-generated dialogue as a placeholder, but the developers have confirmed that professional voice actors are already recording the official lines for an upcoming update. It’s a clever solution that balances enthusiasm with transparency – something many fan projects lack.
The reception has been overwhelmingly positive. McGinn himself commented on the trailer, saying, “As the lead designer of the original game, I can only say… this looks awesome! I want to play it.” His endorsement has boosted the project’s visibility, further igniting nostalgia among players who grew up cruising through Springfield two decades ago.
For fans still hoping for an official Simpsons: Hit & Run remake, the wait continues. A separate Unreal Engine 5 remake had once captured attention before Disney’s legal team intervened, forcing its cancellation. But with the Futurama mod’s creative energy and the upcoming Simpsons crossover in Fortnite, it seems the universe of both series is far from dormant. This mod might not be an official sequel, but it’s the kind of passion project that keeps classic games alive – through creativity, humor, and pure fan love.
