The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max has officially landed, and it’s already stealing the thunder from the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which barely enjoyed a month at the top. While Xiaomi’s naming might sound like a cheeky imitation, the hardware and attention to detail here prove the Chinese brand means serious business. The standout feature? That rear screen – a stunning 120Hz LTPO OLED panel capable of reaching an incredible 3,500 nits of brightness. It’s not just a gimmick; it’s a bold design statement, even if the software still feels limited for now.
Currently, the rear display only supports Chinese third-party apps, which makes sense since the phone is available exclusively in China at launch.
But this secondary screen shines when used as a viewfinder for the powerful triple-camera system. You can take high-quality selfies using the main sensor or switch to ultrawide for more creative shots – reminiscent of what Xiaomi achieved with the Mi 11 Ultra, but now refined to perfection.
On the front, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max offers a 6.9-inch 120Hz flat display, slightly larger than Apple’s latest Pro Max model. The absence of Face ID hardware allows for slimmer bezels and more usable screen real estate. However, unlike Apple’s super-reflective but durable glass, Xiaomi skipped anti-reflective coating – something that might affect usability in direct sunlight.
Inside, Xiaomi’s new HyperOS 3 (built on Android 16) is colorful and bold, taking inspiration from iOS 26’s translucent design language. It feels playful yet polished, although many users are debating the differences between the Chinese and international editions. The Chinese ROM, for instance, includes features like simultaneous dual-SIM internet connectivity, deeper app permission controls, and the ability to block apps like WhatsApp or Facebook from accessing your contacts, call logs, or even sending messages. These privacy tools go far beyond what the global ROM usually offers.
The retail package feels generous: a 100W fast charger, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and a basic case – all included. Xiaomi hasn’t yet revealed when the global rollout will happen, but expectations are high. If the final version matches the ambition of this early Chinese edition, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max could become the new benchmark for Android flagships in 2025.
