After months of swirling speculation and Reddit-fueled chaos, the truth about Stranger Things Season 5 episode runtimes is finally out – and it’s not quite the marathon everyone thought.

Co-creator Ross Duffer has officially confirmed the lengths of the upcoming episodes, ending the long-running rumor that every installment of the final season would stretch past the 90-minute mark.

Duffer shared the news on Instagram on October 13, dropping a short video that showed a behind-the-scenes look at Netflix’s internal interface. The screen displayed each episode labeled as a “work in progress,” with visible runtimes. According to what fans could glimpse, the premiere episode, titled “The Crawl”, will clock in at one hour and eight minutes. Episode two remains untitled but runs 54 minutes, followed by episode three, “The Turnbow Trap”, at one hour and six minutes. Episode four, called “Sorcerer”, will be the longest of the bunch so far, running one hour and 23 minutes.

In true Duffer fashion, the post came with a hint of playful sarcasm: “ACTUAL runtimes,” he wrote, punctuating the statement with a peace sign emoji. The message was clear – enough with the speculation. Fans can now relax knowing the first four episodes won’t be feature-length marathons, at least not yet.

This reveal also clarifies how Netflix plans to roll out the much-anticipated conclusion to its sci-fi phenomenon. Season 5 will be split into three separate drops. The first part – the four episodes Duffer previewed – lands on November 26, perfectly timed for Thanksgiving binge sessions. The next three episodes arrive on Christmas Day, with the final standalone episode premiering on New Year’s Eve. That’s right: three holidays, three emotional gut punches. The split release schedule may frustrate some fans used to watching everything in one sitting, but it’s also Netflix’s clever way of stretching the cultural conversation for weeks.

While the early seasons kept episodes closer to the hour mark, Season 4 pushed boundaries – with several episodes exceeding 70 minutes and the finale running an astonishing two hours and twenty-two minutes. It seems the Duffers are dialing back just a little this time, possibly saving the most cinematic runtime for the series finale itself. Given the emotional stakes and scale of this final season, a massive send-off seems almost guaranteed.

Despite the runtime confirmations, uncertainty still lingers over the later episodes – especially the rumored “movie-length” finale. Duffer’s teasing tone leaves the door open for surprises, suggesting the back half of Season 5 could still deliver something truly epic. Until then, fans can breathe easy knowing the first half of the season won’t require blocking off an entire evening per episode – but maybe just enough popcorn to survive Hawkins’ final battle.

Honestly only the finale needs to be super long, keep the rest tight under 1hr30m!
