Modder xoxor4d has once again pushed the boundaries of what’s possible with RTX Remix, this time bringing full path tracing to Rockstar’s 2008 classic, Grand Theft Auto IV.

The initial compatibility build, available exclusively to Patreon supporters at the $10 “Chocolate Strawberry Advocate Tester” tier and above, gives players a first look at Liberty City reimagined under modern lighting technology – and even early screenshots hint at a striking transformation.

The test build was tried out by ResetEra user gabdeg, who shared several comparison shots online. While the images barely convey the depth of change, they do show how path tracing breathes new life into the old game world – even without replacing any of the original textures. Streets reflect ambient light realistically, neon signs glow against the wet pavement, and shadows move more naturally across characters and vehicles. For a game built before real-time ray tracing even existed, the leap in fidelity is nothing short of stunning.

xoxor4d has a strong history of bringing RTX Remix compatibility to beloved classics such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Portal 2, and Left 4 Dead 2. The latter inspired the dedicated Left 4 Dead 2 RTX NTD project, which recreated the No Mercy campaign with modern rendering. His current effort with GTA IV continues that same passion – not merely to chase visuals, but to prove that old engines can indeed run new light.

On the RTX Remix Compatibility Mods Discord, xoxor4d explained the technical requirements. The latest Complete Edition (1.2.0.59) from either Steam or Rockstar Games is required, though the Rockstar version is preferred due to Steam’s quirks with windowed mode. The mod works with Fusion Fix – the popular GTA IV enhancement package – but users should be aware of possible issues. To address this, xoxor4d plans to compile a special version of Fusion Fix tailored for RTX Remix, ensuring better performance and fewer conflicts. Fusion Fix itself adds numerous improvements, from adjustable FOV and motion blur toggles to FPS limiters, making it an essential companion mod for PC players.

As for public access, xoxor4d stated that the free release won’t arrive until the end of the month. When it does, fans can expect a flood of new screenshots, comparisons, and benchmark tests – and probably a few debates about what counts as “real ray tracing.” Early detractors claim that GTA IV’s materials weren’t designed for ray-traced lighting and therefore can’t reflect properly. Others counter that RTX Remix handles lighting independently of material data, meaning the results are still valid. As modders put it, “this is an early preview – nobody expects remade assets before confirming the tech even works.”

In short, while not perfect, this experimental build proves something exciting: even a gritty 2008 cityscape can feel new again when lit by path tracing. Whether it’s nostalgia, tech curiosity, or pure love for Liberty City, players will soon have a reason to revisit Niko Bellic’s story in a whole new light – literally.
