Andrew Garfield isn’t playing coy this time. The actor behind one of cinema’s most beloved Spider-Men has slammed the door shut on rumors that he’ll return in Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday. In an interview with GQ, Garfield was asked point-blank if either he or Tobey Maguire would once again don the webbed suit after their surprise appearance alongside Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home. His reply? As blunt and emphatic as it gets: “No, unequivocally f***ing no.” That’s about as definitive as Hollywood denials come – though, in Garfield’s case, fans know better than to take anything entirely at face value.
After all, this is the same actor who spent months insisting he wasn’t in No Way Home, only to show up and steal the show.
So when Garfield speaks with that mix of exhaustion and amusement, fans can’t help but wonder if he’s playing the same game again. The Marvel multiverse thrives on surprises, and Garfield’s past performance in the art of misdirection has made audiences naturally suspicious whenever he flatly denies something.
However, when the conversation shifted toward Avengers: Secret Wars, his response suddenly became murkier. Speaking with MTV, Garfield dodged direct confirmation but left a tantalizing trail of ambiguity. “See, what it is, is this a tell? Or what is it? You’ll find out!” he teased, smiling as he tried (and perhaps failed) to keep a straight face. Whether that means anything substantial remains to be seen, but for fans, it’s enough to keep speculation burning bright.
Avengers: Doomsday, now wrapped in principal photography and slated for a December 18, 2026 release, promises one of Marvel’s biggest ensemble casts yet – uniting the original Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and even mutants from the X-Men universe. With Robert Downey Jr. returning, not as Iron Man but as Doctor Doom, the movie’s stakes couldn’t be higher. Given that even Tom Holland’s Spider-Man isn’t confirmed for the lineup – he’s busy headlining his own solo sequel, Spider-Man: Brand New Day – it makes sense that Garfield’s Peter Parker might sit this one out.
But Secret Wars is another story entirely. As the rumored grand finale of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, it’s the perfect stage to bring every major Spider-Man together one last time. Garfield already proved how well his version fits within the sprawling multiverse chaos, and fans still hold out hope for his emotional return, even if it’s just a short cameo. Sadly, the dream of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 remains firmly in the realm of fantasy. “It’s not happening, and I don’t believe it ever will,” Garfield admitted. “But it’s sweet of you to want it to happen.”
So for now, take Garfield at his word – probably. No webs will be slung by him in Avengers: Doomsday. But as history shows, when it comes to Marvel secrets, even the strongest denials can hide the biggest surprises.
