After weeks of teasing, Onyx has finally lifted the curtain on the Boox P6 Pro, a compact e-reader that blurs the line between tablet and smartphone. What makes this launch stand out isn’t just the sleek form factor – it’s the inclusion of full 5G connectivity, making it one of the few e-readers in the world capable of always-on mobile data access.

Alongside that, Onyx is introducing a Kaleido 3 color E Ink display variant that supports 4,096 hues, a remarkable evolution for digital reading devices traditionally limited to grayscale.

The Boox P6 Pro comes in two flavors: a color E Ink model and a monochrome version using the latest Carta 1300 panel. Both measure 6.13 inches diagonally, featuring thin, symmetrical bezels and etched glass for a paper-like feel. The color variant also supports a stylus, making it ideal for readers who like to annotate or sketch directly on the page. The 824 × 1,684 pixel resolution ensures crisp text and sharp color contrast, while automatic brightness adjustment tailors the display to different lighting conditions.

Despite its e-reader DNA, Onyx has equipped the P6 Pro with features that lean closer to a mid-range smartphone. There are stereo speakers for audiobooks and podcasts, a 16 MP rear camera for document scanning or QR reading, and modern connectivity options like dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, and 5G cellular. Under the hood, an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset pairs with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage – expandable via microSD card. The system runs Boox OS 4.1 based on Android 13, allowing users to install their favorite reading apps from Google Play.

Powering it all is a 3,950 mAh battery supporting 15W USB-C charging. While E Ink displays are known for efficiency, some users have questioned whether 5G might drain the battery faster – though Onyx seems to have optimized standby consumption to keep that concern minimal. Still, users can switch to LTE to preserve energy. The P6 Pro is priced at CNY 2,516 ($353) for the monochrome white version and CNY 2,991 ($420) for the black color E Ink edition, launching in China on October 15. Global release details remain unannounced, but given Onyx’s past patterns, an international rollout seems likely before the end of the year.

The Boox P6 Pro signals a new era for e-readers – no longer just passive reading tools, but connected, versatile devices merging the simplicity of paper with the intelligence of modern tech.
