The new HMD Touch 4G is a curious device that sits somewhere between nostalgia and innovation. HMD calls it a hybrid – not quite a smartphone, yet definitely smarter than a traditional feature phone.

It feels like a modern reincarnation of Nokia’s classic Asha line, a familiar name for those who remember the early days of mobile internet. But this time, instead of relying on outdated software, the Touch 4G uses cloud technology to deliver lightweight smart features without needing Android or iOS.

Designed exclusively for the Indian market, the HMD Touch 4G runs on a custom-built RTOS Touch system. This real-time operating system enables the Cloud Phone service, giving users access to web-based apps hosted in the cloud. It’s a simple concept with big implications – users can browse, chat, and use essential tools without a heavy OS or powerful hardware. Pre-installed apps include Express Chat, supporting text, voice, and image messaging, and it even lets users communicate with Android and iOS users who have the same app installed. That’s a smart bridge between old-school devices and the modern smartphone ecosystem.

Hardware-wise, this little gadget packs a 3.2-inch LCD display (320×240 QVGA), a modest 2MP rear camera with LED flash, and a 0.3MP selfie shooter. Powered by a Unisoc T127 chipset with 64MB of RAM and 128MB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD), it’s not built to impress specs enthusiasts. Still, it offers the essentials – Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, FM radio, USB-C charging, and even IP52 dust and splash protection. The 1,950 mAh battery should easily handle a few days of light use, especially since the RTOS is extremely efficient.

Perhaps the biggest selling point, though, is the price: just INR 3,999 (around $45). Available in Cyan and Dark Blue, it’s an affordable communication device with a hint of modern flair. And while critics point out its reliance on cloud-based services – meaning if HMD ever shuts them down, much of the phone’s functionality could disappear – others see it as a smart minimalist choice in a world of digital overload. For many users, the idea of a phone that doesn’t demand constant attention might be refreshing. It’s not about competing with smartphones – it’s about giving people another way to stay connected, without the noise.
