AMD and OpenAI Forge Landmark 6GW GPU Alliance to Shape the Future of Artificial Intelligence

In one of the most consequential moves in the AI hardware industry to date, AMD and OpenAI have announced a multi-year strategic partnership that will redefine the landscape of large-scale artificial intelligence computing. The collaboration centers on the deployment of a colossal 6 gigawatts (GW) of AMD Instinct GPUs, beginning with the rollout of 1 GW of next-generation MI450 accelerators in the second half of 2026. Under the agreement, OpenAI will adopt AMD’s newest Instinct GPUs to build out its global AI infrastructure, integrating multiple generations of AMD’s high-performance accelerators, including the MI300 and MI350 lines, alongside the forthcoming MI450. Each generation brings incremental leaps in speed, efficiency, and memory bandwidth, but the MI450 in particular stands out for its raw computational power – an estimated 40 PFLOPs of AI performance per unit, backed by 432 GB of ultra-fast HBM4 memory and a staggering 19.6 TB/s bandwidth. Together, these specifications make the MI450 a powerhouse capable of handling the most demanding generative AI workloads and foundation model training at global scale.

AMD CFO Jean Hu stated that the deal is expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue over the coming years and be “highly accretive” to AMD’s non-GAAP earnings per share.
