Apple’s latest iPhone 17 series came with its usual wave of accessories, but few expected one of the most talked-about add-ons to be something as simple as a strap. What initially sparked jokes and raised eyebrows is now experiencing delays of weeks across most color options, showing there’s real demand behind the hype.
According to Apple’s official store, shipping dates for the Crossbody Strap vary dramatically depending on the chosen finish. 
Out of the ten available colors, only Tan, Light Gray, and Black can be shipped within days. The bright Neon Yellow version has a late October window, while the remaining six – including some of the more fashionable tones – are estimated for early November delivery. This suggests Apple either underestimated demand or restricted supply intentionally to test the market, but in either case, customers appear to be buying in greater numbers than predicted.
Of course, Apple isn’t alone in spotting the opportunity. Google recently revealed its own Rope Wristlet for the Pixel 10, which works with most USB-C phones that have a case. The striking difference? Price. Google’s solution sells for just $7, while Apple’s official strap costs $59. The stark contrast highlights how Apple continues to position its accessories as lifestyle products rather than mere utilities, appealing to those who value design, branding, and a seamless ecosystem. Meanwhile, Google’s entry signals that the trend isn’t just a one-off gimmick – straps and lanyards are making a comeback globally as phones grow larger and harder to carry comfortably.
Outside the US, straps have been common for years, particularly in parts of Asia where they’re seen as practical, stylish, and even collectible. What’s new is their mainstreaming in the West, where carrying a phone on a strap was often seen as unnecessary or unfashionable. Now, with oversized devices, outdoor lifestyles, and travel habits shifting, more people are realizing the convenience. A strap can free your hands at a concert, keep your phone safe while hiking, or simply reduce the risk of dropping it while commuting.
Personally, I don’t wear a strap every day, but I understand its appeal in specific situations. Going to the beach, traveling, or even running errands without a bag makes the Crossbody Strap surprisingly practical. And clearly, many others agree. What started as a quirky accessory has quietly turned into a strong seller, proving once again that Apple has a knack for making lifestyle accessories feel like essentials. Whether it’s because of genuine utility, brand prestige, or simply a new wave of fashion, the iPhone 17 Crossbody Strap seems destined to become one of the company’s sleeper hits of the year.
